How to find a Profitable Blog Topic? Making Money Online in the Philippines
As you probably know already, bloggers can earn from P 0 per month as well as P 1M+.
For those able to create such revenues from their blog, they had to follow particular rules. One of them is finding a profitable blog idea.
Before going any further, why should you choose a profitable blog topic?
If your goal is solely to write about a topic you love and not expecting anything in return. Then, staying to the amateur level is fine. Spending your time writing and creating content.
But that’s fine because you’re just passionate about it and you’re not worrying about anything else.
However, if your goal is to have a professional blog and bring it to a business level.
Then, you want to combine what you’re passionate about and a way to earn revenues.
Which is why I recommend you find a good topic for your blog. If you do the wrong choice, you might end up like many beginners and not find any great ways to monetize your blog.
Narrow your Blog Topic to do Niche Blogging
Niche blogging is about creating a blog that is positioned on a niche market: meaning a specific product targeted by the blog.
An example would be having a lifestyle blog and a niche could be “gardening”.
As a consequence, your blog is only focused on creating content about gardening. Your goal could be to help people grow their own beautiful garden.
And because you will create great content about it, and you’ll aim for being the best gardening blog in the Philippines. People will come to you more and more. Reading your tips and getting influenced by your sayings.
The amazing thing will be that you will have the best target audience because you will have 100% of readers that are interested in gardening.
And as soon as you want to monetize your blog: like selling online courses for people who want to learn how to have a great garden, or selling your own plants that you grew, or collaborating with a brand that sells gardening tools, etc.
So, you will transform your amateur blog in a professional one and thanks to your niche blog. You will earn revenues from it.
However, if gardening is not your passion and you just thought that this niche topic could be nice. Don’t do it.
You will not sustain writing about it in the long term and that’s where you will fail. In order to find the profitable blog idea, check what you love writing about or doing.
Look into your Passions to find your Blog Topic Niche
So, you’re thinking of starting a professional blog and you’re asking yourself: which blog topic can I write about that I’ll be able to get money from?
One of the first rules that everyone recommends is to investigate your own passions.
If the topic you’ve selected is not something related to your passions. You’ll have a great trouble being inspired. And in a few months, you’ll just stop writing for your blog.
Honestly, even if I am very passionate about what I write. There are just some days I don’t feel like I want to write.
So, just imagine how hard it will be, if you don’t even like the topic you’re talking about.
It may sound obvious, but I’ve seen a lot of beginners starting a blog because they’re just motivated by the revenue possibilities.
But this motivation isn’t sustainable.
Look into your Skills
Another way to find a great niche topic is to assess if one of your skills could be a profitable topic.
Let’s say you’re an amazing photographer, you could easily use this as your blog topic.
Thanks to your experience and tips, you will tell people how to be awesome photographers as well.
Then, by monetizing with courses, e-books, and online products. Or even, by reviewing some gadgets and products you’re using and placing affiliate links to earn commission if there’s any sales.
You will have a professional blog thanks to your skills and you will be able to earn more revenues than if you were just doing freelance photography.
There are many ways to monetize your blog and I’ll write some blog posts about it. I suggest you subscribing to the newsletter to stay updated.
Besides, going back to my photographer’s blog example.
If you’re already an amazing photographer, maybe a professional or someone known for that. You’ve already acquired the credibility that many beginners in blogging are looking for.
By being an expert in your domain, it will help you sell better your services and earn more from your blog.
Credibility conveys trust and trust enables purchasing.
If you have a blog about fashion and you used to work in the fashion industry. You’re already ahead of others who are just starting a fashion blog and never had your experience, etc.
As you understood, It is the same for any other skills that you have.
Even if you are working in a BPO, you can teach people how to be the best call center agent. I am sure lots of people would like to know that as they will be able to earn promotions or incentives at work.
Use something you know how to do better than others and share your knowledge with people. Those interested in a similar topic will follow you and even pay for this knowledge.
And even better, if your skills are linked to what you’re passionate about!
Now Apply this in the Real Life
Theory is always a good way to project yourself but now, you must apply those principles in real life.
Create a list of the passions and skills you have. Then amongst them, try to see which ones you’ll be able to create a lot of content with.
Like for months or even years. Because that’s what you’re going to commit to.
Creating content for your blog requires a lot of efforts and energy. So choose wisely.
If you don’t know where to start, you can also begin this way.
First, choose a main theme:
- Travel
- Fashion
- Personal growth
- Lifestyle
- Food
- Online Business
- Specific Work Industry
- Etc.
Second, see where you could be good at and which one you just love talking about.
From there, dig more and be specific about the topic you choose.
The more you’re specific, the better people will identify you and the more relevant you’ll answer people’s problems (and that’s the first thing readers want to do).
For example, I am choosing Online Business.
In this main theme, I decided to write only about blogging. Now, people know who to go to when they want to learn about how to blog.
I really recommend you to be specific. If you want to do a travel blog for example, there is so much competition right now, that it’s smarter to narrow your topic.
Another example, if you want to do a travel blog.
Let’s say you are a Filipino living in Japan. Focus on Filipinos who want to travel in Japan. Make dedicated content to them and make yourself known.
And I am sure the next time an Airlines Company is opening a new route to Japan from the Philippines. They might ask you to be featured in their marketing campaigns as you are the person that will represent the most this specific and super niche blog topic.
Do not try to reach the mass because a specific audience will bring you much more opportunities and you will be much more identifiable to brands and readers.
If you’re doing a blog only about Traveling in the Visayas.
Maybe, you won’t attract people that are looking to travel somewhere else. But you’ll capture an audience that is specifically looking for tips in the Visayas.
You’ll be then recognized as an expert on this subject and if there’s anyone looking for travel tips in that region.
They’ll go to you instead of any other random blogger that has a general travel blog.
If there is any hotel in the Visayas that wants some promotion or advertising. They will go to you and pay you so that you can write about their hotel, etc.
To sum up, focus on a blog topic niche and you will have a great profitable blog.
However, I need to warn you.
Matching Passions and Skills is not enough to have a Profitable Blog Idea
Finding a profitable blogging niche is one of the best strategies to start an online business.
Most of the time, people visit your blog because they’re finding useful information or relevant solutions to their problems.
With a growing traffic and monetization, you will have a great blog.
Keep in mind that we are selfish on the internet. We want to answer our own issues.
Besides, getting a topic from your passions or your skills is not enough.
For a blog to potentially earn sufficient revenues, you have to keep this in mind:
The Blog Topic must be interesting enough
Obviously, if you love something that no one cares about. Nobody will visit your website. And if there’s no one on your blog, there’s no one to sell something to.
Therefore, no revenues generated.
Which is why your topic must be at least a bit popular. I agree that some other bloggers would be already taking advantage of it and that your market share might reduce due to the competition.
But the fact is that the topic works! Don’t pick a topic that no one reads about.
We all have different tastes and we might prefer reading from this person than someone else.
That is why new blogs about food or travel are still being created.
Even though we could think the room is full.
It’s always possible to have an audience that follow your voice because you’re a great content creator that they like.
Some Niches are easier to Monetize or just Pay better
Like for industries, the truth is that some topics are easier to monetize, and just pay better.
The laws of economy apply for blogging. If there are a lot of travel bloggers in the market, meaning a lot of offers, brands that need travel bloggers in their marketing campaigns might pay them lower because of relative scarcity.
Let’s talk about cosmetics bloggers for example. The way they earn money is usually to review a beauty product and place a link of the product for their audience to purchase it.
Link that is usually an affiliate one, meaning that they are getting a commission every time someone purchases the beauty product through their link.
You can imagine how big the potential revenues could be depending on the number of sales.
For travel boggers, affiliate links are also doable as Booking.com or Agoda.com have affiliate programs. Meaning that every time someone books a hotel based on the recommendation of a travel blogger, he or she will earn a little commission.
However, this is much more difficult as people tend to study many different options for hotels and take more time to decide. They will probably book a room the next day or even the next week after they read your review.
So, the next time they open their computer to book, they might not pass through your link anymore and you won’t earn any commission.
Whereas the beauty bloggers could have less friction with the purchasing process of their audience. Their readers like the beauty product, it is a small amount so they can just get it right away and you are earning the commission right away as well.
Another example, I am using examples because that’s the best way to illustrate how blog topics or niches can pay differently.
Let’s say before you started a blog, you were the owner of a home decor business. To sell your products, your usual way is to display your furniture in a physical location like in fairs or in your own shop in a mall.
On the other hand, you got interested in digital marketing.
You created a blog about home decor and especially, about how to create a minimalist environment.
Your audience starts reading more and more of your blog posts because you are giving them good tips about having their own minimalist living room.
And, the great thing is that your products fit perfectly with the minimalist design: aesthetic furniture with sober colors. Your audience knowing that you produce minimalist designed furniture will start buying from you instead of looking for another supplier.
As they already trust you and they know you because you gave them valuable content with your blog.
Your blog is acting like your biggest advertisement tool for your real products. Doing this, you’ll be ahead of many of your competitors that are just doing traditional marketing and forgot one of the most important one: digital marketing.
To sum up, selling physical products and combining it with a blog to promote them is a smart move that will lead your blog topic to a profitable blog to pursue.
What I am Recommending You
Blogging is a very complex activity. Because your choices will significantly impact your profitability.
If your blog is about your professional activity, such as design, lawyer, financial advisor… your earnings will depend on the possibility of attracting new clients in your blog.
A profitable blog idea should be a compromise between your interests and your skills.
Also, it should be targeted and specific.
I love blogging and my skills are about doing business. That’s why I decided to create a blog that will help Filipinos who want to grow their own professional blog.
When I started, I wanted to write about every topic I had in mind. As a result, people couldn’t really identify my blog.
They wouldn’t come to see my blog again and again because they were not sure about what I was going to talk about.
Now, that they know. My traffic and engagement increased significantly.
So, be specific.
